Princess Royal

This model locomotive was constructed of a body, a frame and wheels. The body was diecast in the white metal alloy zamak. The frame was diecast in a steel alloy. The frame was supported by the wheels, which in this instance was an 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. The driving wheels were held in place by crimped lugs. The wheels were also diecast in a steel alloy. In later production, the wheels were given a varnish like finish. Final production, the wheels were molded in plastic. The lead pony truck and middle pair of driving wheels did not have flanges. The trailing Bissel truck did not have true wheels but was made part of the diecast frame.

The model tender consisted of a body riveted on a chassis. The body was diecast in the white metal alloy zamak, the chassis diecast in a steel alloy. This was mounted on a pair of flanged wheels.

The two parts were sold separately, the tender usually accompanied with a straight section of track.

Apart from the obvious chimney, dome and cab, there was significant additional detail. This included steam pipe, water feed to boiler, firebox with rivets, a running plate, splashers and name plate and a front buffer beam. On the smokebox door were brackets and hinges. Along the sides of the boiler were hand grab rails and water feed pipes. The pistons and valve gear were outlined, with a smooth or chequered infill. The cab windows were also filled in.

Detail on the tender body included coal and water cap. The chassis had three pairs of coil springs and axle boxes.

Early production had a riveted tin plate swivel eye linking the locomotive to a downward pin on the tender. The back of the tender had a cast ring loop. Later production gave the locomotive a cast ring tow bar, the tender having an up facing pin.

The livery was the less well known BR blue applied to express passenger locomotives for a short time after 1949, with black smokebox and cab roof. The tender came in the same livery, with coal painted black. There was high relief lining and the BR motif, which were picked out in red. The buffer beams were finished in red.

All painting was done prior to assembly. Assembly required fixing the frame to the body. This was achieved by a molded post inside each end passing through the frame. The ends were then peened, to keep the two parts together.

The tender had ‘LONE STAR LOCOS’ and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ cast in high relief on the underside.
