BR Midland Region Coach

Though named a British Railways Midland Region coach, this corridor surburban coach was actually based on a Triang 00 gauge London Midland and Scottish Railway coach, a design that did not exist in reality.

The coach body was diecast in the white metal alloy zamak. This was mounted on a pair of bogies, which were diecast in a steel alloy, made up of two pairs of flanged wheels. The bogies were different castings for the coupling, the leading one had a pin and the trailing one had a towing slot.

The coach body windows were filled, either as smooth or grilled, with outline detail of sliding ventilators above the windows. Doors were near the end and were also filled, with detail of handles and hinges. Beneath the main coach was a a truss rod frame, which was filled. The coach had corridor doors cast at each end. The roof had roof vents the length of the coach, down the middle.

Bogie detail included the side frame and axle boxes.

They were either painted maroon with a black roof, British Railways crimson and cream (known as blood and custard) or a chocolate and cream livery. Windows were painted the same colour scheme as the roof. The body was painted prior to assembly.

Assembly was achieved with each bogie mounted on a post coming from within the body of the coach. The posts had cupped ends, which were peened over to hold the bogies in place. The wheel sets on the bogie were held in place by crimped lugs.

The coach roof had ‘LONE STAR LOCOS’ and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ cast in high relief on the underside.
